In An Ever Changing World

I wanted to pick more than one!  I have students who are ESL, Bilingual, and Special Education teachers.   They have asked me what they could do to “enliven” their presentations and get more of their students “hooked” into learning.  What I ask them is What would you like to have me do to support your own learning style?  Of course, just like in any class, I get the No homework, No assignments, No tests, and the like!  I remind them that I only give home learning!  Before this course, I would have suggested they work on learning more about learning styles and Multiple Intelligences.  I directed them to many online sites that have all sorts of information about both educational methods they can use with their students.  Now, I can offer them something more:  I would offer them Zoho to start and show them what it can do for their presentations and the presentations and work their students do.   My reasons are simple really. One is that it has so many ways that a presentation can be shown to their students.  A teacher could use text, audio, video, and whitebook, embed sites, use SKYPE, and a number of other things.   It seems really multi-faceted.  It seems to have something for any learning style and would help several of my own students well.

If they worry about privacy issues, or other things, I’d offer them Google Notebook for student group work.  Students could share material, ideas, suggestions, and edit things posted from each other.  Students could create a product using all sorts of pictures, video, and meet their own needs!  Cool idea.

I think I’d love to play around with Slideshare!  That’s where I could have my Power Point presentations.  I will be experimenting with that and Zoho myself.  I really like the idea that excuses in doing work can be reduced.  I read something the other day about excuses.  I wish I could remember who said it.  It was:   There aren’t enough crutches in the world for lame excuses!  Cracked me up!

It is fantastic to think of all the options we now have at our fingertips to help students with different learning styles. Many of them are also free, so they are there for the taking. I have been trying to spend some time learning about Zoho also. We have teachers in my district who put their PowerPoint notes on a public drive at school for students to use during their study halls, but they can’t access them outside of school. We need to be using Slideshare instead.

I had to do a slide presentation for an interview a few weeks ago, I wish that I had known about Slideshare then. Despite my redundancy of media – USB drive, CD, etc. I still worried about whether anything would work. Slideshare is a wonderful tool that will easy accessibility.

At school, we have to deal with “handin” and “handout” folders for access and marking. This means that I have to copy everything from the handin folder to my USB drive to take home to make OR stay at school to mark. Slideshare should free up my life! Thanks, Sue!
